Open Source Qwen3-Coder is a Top AI Strategy, Alibaba's Ambition Can't Be Hidden

Hello everyone, this is Programmer Wanfeng, who is fully committed to AI Programming Practice. While busy developing open source projects recently, I've also been following the dynamics of the open source industry.
Yesterday, Alibaba open-sourced Qwen3-Coder for free, which is really an explosive news in the recent trend of increasingly expensive large models!

Many friends are curious, why did Alibaba contribute its core technology for free?
01 Open Source is Not Charity, But a Grand Strategy
On July 23, Alibaba threw the latest generation code large model Qwen3-Coder, including both code and weights, onto GitHub, directly igniting the entire developer community.
Someone did the math: for the same 200K context, Claude4 costs 1.3 yuan / 1000 tokens, while Qwen3-Coder only costs 0.4 yuan, and the performance is even better. What's more, it refreshed the open source records of three major evaluations: SWE-Bench, WebArena, and BFCL in one go, leaving GPT-4.1 behind.
If you think this is just "showing off" or "doing charity", you're underestimating Alibaba.
In the past two years, the Tongyi Qianwen family has been iterating at an average rate of once every two months: covering all sizes from 0.5B to 110B, with full task lines for code, vision, and multimodality, and even building its own three-carriage chip system: Hangguang, Yitian, and Xuantie. I've also been tracking news in this area, 👇
While others are still circling around "model as product", Alibaba has already turned the model into water, electricity, and coal - laying pipelines through open source so that everyone can access their computing power and scenarios at low cost.
In other words, open source is not charity, but the most ruthless commercial strategy: first build the road to your doorstep, then build the toll booth in your own hands.
02 The Bold Leap from E-commerce to "Cloud+AI" Operating System
Rewind to April 2023, when Tongyi Qianwen first appeared, the outside world was still questioning "Can Alibaba do large models well?"
18 months later, the Qwen series has exceeded 400 million downloads worldwide, with 140,000 derivative models, directly dominating the top ten on HuggingFace. Behind this is Alibaba's 380 billion yuan AI capital expenditure over the next three years, the most lavish single technical investment in the history of Chinese tech companies.
Why dare to invest so much? Because Alibaba has already thought it through: e-commerce, logistics, and payment were once its moat, but in the AI era, the real operating system is "cloud+AI".

Cloud provides computing power, AI provides intelligence, and the combination can define the next decade like Windows+Intel did back then. So we see:
- Infrastructure layer: Hangguang chip + Yitian CPU + Xuantie RISC-V, hardware-software integration for cost reduction and efficiency increase;
- Platform layer: ModelScope community + Bailian platform, packaging models, toolchains, and APIs into plug-and-play building blocks;
- Application layer: Tongyi Lingma generates 3 billion lines of code, directly transforming programmers into architects.
Alibaba is no longer just an e-commerce company selling goods, but wants to become the foundation for all enterprises' digital transformation.
Just as Microsoft bundled the PC era with Windows, Alibaba is now bundling the AI era with Qwen.
03 When "Open Source Hegemony" Becomes Reality
The Stanford 2025 AI Index report shows that the performance gap between Chinese and American large models has narrowed from 8% to 1.7%, with Alibaba and other manufacturers' open source arms race being the biggest contributor. But Alibaba's ambition goes beyond technical leadership; it wants ecological hegemony.

Imagine: when startups all use Qwen3-Coder for development, when 90% of banks, car companies, and mobile phone manufacturers integrate Tongyi Qianwen into their business systems, when example code in university textbooks defaults to importing qwen, Alibaba will have the "Android ecosystem" of the AI era.
At that time, no matter how strong closed-source models are, they will inevitably fall into the awkward situation of Windows and Linux today - not that the technology is not good enough, but that the world has been spoiled by open source.
More subtly, Alibaba is giving developers the sharpest spear (model) for free, but holding the most solid shield (cloud+chips) in its own hands.
You can use Qwen for free, but if you want lower latency, higher concurrency, and more stable SLA, you will eventually return to the embrace of Alibaba Cloud.
Open source and commercialization have completed a beautiful left-right struggle here.
So, stop asking why Alibaba is so aggressively open-sourcing.
When a company is willing to spend four years turning e-commerce into infrastructure, and then two years turning AI into air, its ambition is no longer market value, but defining the rules of the next industrial cycle.
As Wu Yongming said in his internal letter: "We want to be the State Grid of the AI era."
Now, the grid is electrified, and the lights are turning on one by one.
